"FARM SKILLS"

The schedule is based on a typical day’s activities on a working station so you will experience when working as an outback cattle ranch farm hand. The days begin early (typically 6.30 am) and finish late afternoon (5.30am- 6pm) with a ‘smoko’ (tea break/cuppa in the UK!) and an hour lunch. It’s not all just hard work though because we usually finish each day with a debrief and a few drinks at the main house so you can have a laugh and start building good memories for life.

Exclusive to those  completing the “Farm Skills” Experience – if you’re looking for jobs on Australian cattle ranches or sheep ranches after the Experience, let us know and we will send your profile to cattle and sheep ranchers looking for workers as soon as you have completed the Experience.  You could be receiving calls about jobs while you’re on the safari and you can contact others when you return!

What will I learn?

  • Being Team Leader for a day
  • Feeding poddy calves (young cattle not with their mothers)
  • Preparing trucks, tools and equipment for the day’s activities
  • Repairing fences
  • Maintaining watering systems, repairing poly pipe
  • Making useful knots
  • Safe bush driving
  • Taking care of yard animals (working dogs, chickens etc)

Did you ever think you’d be learning how to clean the air filter on a D9 dozer!?

"ADVANCED HORSE SKILLS"

This horse riding holiday in Australia will be one you will remember for the rest of your life!
Be prepared to spend every minute of your week riding and handling our beautiful Australian Stock Horses. This is an opportunity to learn Australian horsemanship skills by tuning/tweaking your previously acquired horse-riding skills (not for beginner riders).

Please note; if you’re going to join the “Advanced Horse Skills” experience, you must bring approved flat-soled riding boots, not joggers or thick soled boots. Most Australian farm job involving horses will require you to wear approved riding boots so you will need them if you are serious about horse work.

What will I learn?

  • Australian stock horsemanship skills and techniques
  • The types of horses, saddlery and equipment used in Australia
  • Preparation for a typical day of mustering and stock work
  • Riding and mustering in the large paddocks typically experienced on large Australian stations

WHY CHOOSE US?

We know there are other providers but before you purchase any Australian farm skills or horse skills related course, we strongly suggest you consider the points below and compare us against any other provider you might be considering.

Our Outback safari will show the real outback Queensland, well off the regular tourist track!

The Farm Skills experience you will have is as close to real life on an Australian cattle ranch as you can get to the real thing. We are a working outback cattle ranch covering approximately 85,000 acres (34,000 hectares, about 350 sq km!) usually carrying around 2,000 head of cattle.

We are located 744 klm (462 miles) west of Brisbane, in the middle of Queensland's prime cattle country and most definitely in 'the outback'

We have been employing UK and European travelers as farm hands for over 25 years and usually have at least 2-3 working with us

We only make guarantees if we personally can absolutely, without any exception deliver against (Note: you might want to ask questions about other providers offering a job 'guarantee' )

We're members of the Backpacker's Guild, a network of people, organisations and small businesses who can assist Backpackers throughout their stay in Australia

Your accommodation on Halton Station will be your own private bedroom in a historic, renovated Shearer's quarters!

We have 2 generations of experience managing cattle and outback properties

You can contact us in case of emergency in Australia anytime after you've left us, we'll do whatever we can to help you...that's peace of mind for you!

Farm Skills: We train you in core skills we know are the basics ranchers want and not on activities that the rancher will most likely never ask you to do

We will give you a Certificate of Completion (printed and electronic version) signed by us listing all the skills you’ve been trained in that you can attach future job applications that will help towards getting your 2nd year Australian Working Holiday Visa Extension.

We are a small operation and focus on quality so we only take 6 people at a time meaning you get much more instructor and 'hands-on' than other providers

HOW TO GET TO US?
